Old Wulfrunians raise their game.

⚽West Midlands Regional League Div 1⚽

Old Wulfrunians 2 Newport Town 1

(played at Brinsford Lane)

This was a strange sort of a game played in atrocious conditions;strange inasmuch as the teams swapped roles either side of half-time.The first half belonged to Newport who enjoyed the lions' share of possession and duly went in ahead at the break courtesy of a misplaced clearance to Thomas on 43 minutes. The changed fortunes of the teams after the break was incredible with Wulfs dominating play and Town restricted somewhat to occasional forays. Then came the stand-out moment of the game,a 35 yard(might have been more !) 'worldie ' from Stevenson( you could watch MOTD for the next 10 years and you wouldn't see a better goal 😜). As if that wasn't enough to brighten a distinctively dark, wet afternoon Wulfs then produced another moment of magic when Agnello(I think) curled in a beauty from the left 😖.

Town played their part in a hard-fought but fair game but credit to Wulfrunians for raising their game to take the points.

Sporting Khalsa progress in FA Vase

                                  ⚽FA Vase⚽

Sporting Khalsa 3 Walsall Wood 1         At the Aspray Arena

A week after a 1-1 draw between these two sides, rivalry was renewed in this FA Vase game and what a cracker it was from start to finish. From the off you could almost feel the 'needle' in the air;these two teams were out to prove a point to each other.

Khalsa had the initiative from the off and on ten minutes they took the lead through Holdcroft which, funnily enough seemed to settle both teams and it was pretty 'even steven' until the game exploded into life in the 33rd minute when the visitors' No 9 reacted to a shoulder charge and was dismissed. Within a few minutes the hosts were awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Woodhouse and the visitors looked to be really up against it.

Whatever was said at half-time really energised the visitors who, although being a man and two goals down, took the game to their hosts and were desperately unlucky on more than one occasion.Things took a decided turn for the worse for the visitors on 69 minutes when the keeper made a hash of a kick out,the ball going straight to  Khalsa player Armstrong who still had work to do but did it admirably and dispatched a low shot into the corner. All praise to the visitors who came again(no sign of heads dropping) and gained reward for some enterprising play with a consolation goal for Butler.

So Khalsa deservedly progress to the next round but plaudits to the visitors who gave it everything...and more!
