Normally I don’t bother eating at football matches.

On Easter Monday I went to a ‘Professional’ game and watched  a chap and his pie. Firstly he removed the crust, with the delicate ease of a surgeon, giving me the chance to spy the inside. I have no idea the title of the item he bought but it resembled dark brown gravy with little lumps in. He then  spooned out the contents with his plastic fork, not the easiest of task, and threw the pastry, where the whole pie belonged, in the bin.

That got me to thinking about the diets of Proper Football supporters. On most grounds ‘Pies’ are not available. Because there is no call for them perhaps, but  probably due to the high costs of keeping them warm.
On Easter Saturday Mick and I had a mug of hot chocolate before the game and a mug of soup at half time, although Mick also scoffed a bar of chocolate with his soup to keep faith with the Easter spirit. The drinks not only replenished  the body but also warmed the hands on a perishingly cold day and that alone was well worth the £1 a time. On many Proper Football grounds we may have been offered a Hot Dog or Burger with Onions and given the fact that Onions are a vegetable would have counted towards our ‘Five a day’.  Some clubs also serve Chips with Tomato sauce and that would have counted double since Tomatoes and Potatoes can be considered vegetable or fruit. So, my conclusion is that Proper Football supporters are much more healthy eaters than the ‘professional’ supporter.

Happy Eating, my mates. We will save planet with our green, grass roots ideals.
