Wulfrunians finish on a high.

Midland Football League

AFC Wulfrunians 3 Coventry Sphinx 1

Played at Castlecroft

It appeared these two sides had saved the best 'till last as both me and my mate Pete rated this as probably the best game we've seen this season.Make no mistake, this was no end-of-season fayre but a great battle between two very good teams.Wulfrunians were straight out of the blocks and before Sphinx knew what had hit them they were one down and seemingly in disarray. To all intents and purposes it was looking as though a big score was in the offing for the hosts and slow as they were to get into the game,Sphinx weathered the storm and before the break they were level from a delightful chip from Nesbitt. You won't see it repeated from all angles on MOTD and mores the pity,it was an absolute gem.
So,all level at the break and everything to play for in the second half and the visitors came storming out to win the game, pinning their hosts back for long periods with some stunning controlled passing.Alas for them, they seemed to have left their shooting boots in the changing rooms. When they looked certain to score(on at least 3 occasions)Wulfs two full-backs, who both had superb games, were there to deny them. The sky turned black, the temperature plummeted and the heavens opened with a deluge which quickly turned to a raging hailstorm. Here,I have to blow my own trumpet; I turned to Pete and said 'Sphinx have wasted their chances,Wulfs will break away and score' and that's exactly what happened as Brown got his second and shortly afterwards, completed his hat-trick.The shock of being on the end of a 3-1 scoreline after the way they had played, was visible to all.The visitors had more than enough efforts to win the game but they had all been wasted whereas Wulfs probably had four chances and converted three of them.
To sum up,this was a belting game to finish the season on and credit to all for their efforts considering the filthy conditions.
