Wulfrunians progress

                      AFC Wulfrunians v Gornal Athletic
                               Birmingham Senior Cup

What a strange game ! From the start the visitors looked very much up for it, taking the game to their hosts and got a deserved goal with the simplest of moves; a ball to acres of space on the wide right, a low cross and a fairly simple tap-in. Wulfs looked out of sorts with passes, crosses, in fact everything seeming to go anywhere but where it was meant, while Gornal were looking very comfortable on the ball. Towards the end of the half Wulfs were getting their game together and equalised with a lucky rebound of a Wulfs player. A comment was heard " Just watch Wulfs go in with a 2-1 lead". Lo and behold, that's exactly what transpired a couple of minutes later with what looked like a back-heel from Nathan Rose-Laing. It seemed harsh on the visitors who had not really seemed in much danger.

Half-time ; AFC Wulfrunians 2 Gornal Athletic 1

Within a few minutes of the restart Gornal were level. Goalkeeper Tiptons' attempt to gather the ball also brought down the player and he saved the resulting penalty only for Sangha to hit the rebound past him. The introduction of Thompson seemed to galvanise the hosts and they gradually took control and it was no surprise really when they again took the lead through Rose-Laing. Still, the visitors looked dangerous and but for Tiptons' heroics would have drawn level. Wulfs' superior firepower showed as the game continued and they added two more goals through Robertson and Piggot. What might seem a perfunctory result on paper was, in fact a hard-fought victory with the visitors not really deserving such a mauling.

Result ; AFC Wulfrunians 5 Gornal Athletic 2
