Burntwood Town v Inkberrow
This was a departure from our normal routine in that it was our first Midland Combination game, Burntwood play their home games at Burntwood Leisure Centre and as such are unable to charge for entrance to games. Funds are raised by selling programmes(when the Chairman has the spare time to produce them) and raffles, etc to pay pitch rental of over 500 quid per season for starters. This really is grass-roots football where the Chairman is usually a jack-of-all-trades and the one with the deepest pockets. We had a nice chat with the Burntwood Chairman who, I suspect is typical of many hard-working people at this level
Inkberrow are from the north-east of Worcestershire and were awarded FA Charter Standard in 2004. Their philosophy is basically to link football with local social activities.
Talk about six-pointers ! Inkberrow, at the start of play were at the foot of the table with Town 5 points above them having played 3 games fewer. The visitors were first onto the attack and could have led early on but Town were soon controlling the game and went close with a couple of efforts. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams having five or ten minute spells of pressure and the visitors were unlucky when a looping cross hit the bar and was cleared. The stalemate was broken just before half-time when a period of Town pressure led to them taking the lead.
Half-time ; Burntwood Town 1 Inkberrow 0
The second half was much more of the same but with both sides having more chances only to be let down by poor finishing. The hosts increased their lead and the game looked done and dusted but the visitors went for broke and poured forward hitting the bar again. They were rewarded with a goal with about 15 minutes to go leading to some last-ditch defending by Town. Town recovered their composure and should have increased their lead but for some heroics by the visiting goalkeeper.
A excellent game played in good spirit, this result leaves Inkberrow somewhat stranded at the bottom but gives Town a chance of catching those above.
Entrance was free, there were no programmes and drinks were available at the indoor café.
Crowd ; About 25(including a border collie and a staffie)
Referee ; Ok
